Army Black Knights Football
From when play began for the Army Black Knights in 1890 until 1998, the team played as an independent and without a conference affiliation.http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/independents/army/index.php During that time, they won five national championships, in 1914, 1916, 1944, 1945 and 1946.http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/independents/army/championships.php Also during that time, three Black Knights were awarded the Heisman Trophy, Felix Blanchard in 1945, Glenn Davis in 1946 and Peter Dawkins in 1958. Each also won the Maxwell Award as well.http://espn.go.com/college-football/awards/_/team/349
Between 1925 and 1946, the Black Knights played against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 21 times, which created a rivalry between the two teams. The game was played at the original Yankee Stadium and after the New York Yankees moved to the Bronx, New York, in 2010, the rivalry was renewed when the teams met for the first football game played in the new stadium.http://www.und.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/072009aaa.html Army also holds a rivalry with the Navy Midshipmen, the first team that they played in 1890 and a team they currently meet at the end of each season.http://www.phillylovesarmynavy.com/RIVALRY-HISTORY
In 1998, the Army Black Knights joined the Conference USA, in which they played until 2005 when they returned to independent status.http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/independents/army/index.php
