The Spanish Riding School of Vienna

The training of a rider takes 8-12 years.http://www.srs.at/en/tradition/the-training/ A rider moves from cadet to assistant rider (able to leave the supervision of the Stable Master) in 4-6 years. http://www.srs.at/en/tradition/the-training/<ref>http://www.srs.at/en/tradition/the-training/ Riders learn a complete curriculum that not only includes riding, but how to care for each stallion and their individual needs, the care of tack, as well as the history of and principles of classical horsemanship. After 4 years the student is evaluated, and if found acceptable, is given a young stallion to care for and train. The rider must train this young stallion to successfully perform in a public performance, a feat that could take another 6 years. http://www.srs.at/en/tradition/the-training/<ref>http://www.srs.at/en/tradition/the-training/ In 2008 the school accepted their first 2 female cadets.http://www.srs.at/en/tradition/the-history/ Very few riders reach the exalted position of Chief Rider. These are extraordinary individuals with exceptional qualities in perseverance, patience, understanding, self discipline, and leadership, as well as knowing how to pass their knowledge along.http://www.srs.at/en/tradition/the-training/<ref>http://www.srs.at/en/tradition/the-training/

Barrel Racing

Barrel Racing began in the 1940s when the women involved in rodeos decided to add events for themselves. http://www.ivis.org/proceedings/aaep/1997/Strickli.pdf The first barrel racing organization started with 74 members and had 60 approved rodeos. The total payout for these events was $29,000. http://www.ivis.org/proceedings/aaep/1997/Strickli.pdf Today barrel racing has grown into a multimillion dollar industry. At the 2009 NBHA World championship the total purse offered was $207,788.00 and there were 1509 entries. http://www.barrelhorsenews.com/component/content/article/61-2009-show-results/3091-nbha-world-championships-augusta-ga-10242009-results The top winner came away with $5532.00. http://www.barrelhorsenews.com/component/content/article/61-2009-show-results/3091-nbha-world-championships-augusta-ga-10242009-results In 1995 World Champion Barrel Racer, Sherry Potter-Cervi, earned more money than any other competitor in professional rodeo and in 2010 is $10,897 from setting a new WPRA record. http://www.ivis.org/proceedings/aaep/1997/Strickli.pdf http://www.wpra.com/ Charmayne James Rodman earned more than 1 million dollars over her barrel racing career, mostly on one horse.http://www.ivis.org/proceedings/aaep/1997/Strickli.pdf

From these beginnings many barrel racing associations have begun, including the Women's Professional Rodeo Association, National Barrel Horse Association, International Barrel Racing Association, United Barrel Racing Association, and many state associations. Men may also compete in barrel racing. Barrel Racing has also spread to other countries and there are barrel racing associations for Italy, Australia, and others.http://www.nbhaitaly.com/ http://www.abha.com ...

Kentucky Derby Winner

Churchill Downs has been the home of the Kentucky Derby since 1875. The track was the brain child of Col. M. Lewis Clark, who wanted a Louisville Jockey Club for highlighting Kentucky bred horses. The track officially opened on May 17, 1875 with a 4 race card, with the Kentucky Derby being one of the races. Bonaventure won the first race ever run at Churchill Down. The winner of the first Kentucky Derby was Aristides, who was owned by H. P. McGrath. The first trainer to win the Derby was Ansel Williamson, and the jockey, was Oliver Lewis, both African-Americans. The Twin Spires were added in 1894-95 when a grandstand was being added. The first national telecast of the Kentucky Derby was in 1952.http://www.churchilldowns.com/about/history
