Owl Box

A live feed of a wild mother barn owl has become popular on the streaming video site UStream. The first offspring of the internet-sensation barn owl pair made its way into the world on March 21, 2010. The owl box is located in the owners' back yard in San Marcos, California. The nest is sitting 15 feet above ground level. The keepers of the owl believe that the mother owl is a first time mother. She is estimated to be about 14 inches in height. On Sunday, March 21, a chick named "Max" poked its way through its shell in the wooden owl box. The owners, Carlos and Donna Royal celebrated as their newest chick arrived. The Royals had placed the owl box in their back yard two years ago, outfitting the owl sanctuary with live streaming video but waited until January 2010 for a nesting pair. The two owls, named Molly and her mate McGee took residence in the box which rested upon a 15-foot pole. Sasha Grey PETA

On Friday, January 8, 2010, PETA, the "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" group, released a new advertisement for their animal birth control campaign, starring ex-adult movie star Sasha Grey. The advertisement shows Grey in a sexy pose, with her bare back, looking at the camera. The ad sports the text:

"Too Much Sex Can Be a Bad Thing - Have your Cats and Dogs Spayed or Neutered".

Together with the unveiling of the advertisement, PETA also released a YouTube Behind the Scenes video. On the PETA site, Sasha adds:

"I think spaying and neutering is incredibly important. … [I]t keeps the animals out of the shelters, and there's too many unwanted animals out there already."

Gardening in Zone 2

What is a Hardiness Zone Map: In the 1960's the USDA developed a hardiness zone map. This map has been updated several times through the years. There are ten zones each separated by 10 degrees. Each zone is further broken down into subzones A and B separated by 5 degrees. The basis for the zones is the cold tolerance of plants and the average annual minimum temperature in a given area. The coldest area, being Zone 1 at -50 degrees and the warmest, Zone 11 at above 40 degrees. Commercial growers of plants and seeds use this map to label their stock for the consumer. Make sure the plants are actually suited for your climate though, many chain stores sell plants nationwide. http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html

Unfortunately the hardiness zone map does not take into consideration snow levels, summer temperatures, wind and humidity. Snow can insulate plants and the lack of snow and water can cause plants to freeze. The boundary lines on a zone map are not absolute, hills and valleys and other natural conditions can raise or lower the temperatures in each zone. Plants that grow well in Zone 2 on the east coast does not mean they will grow in Zone 2 on the west coast.
