Alexandria National Museum

Located Tariq Al-Horreya Street (former Rue Fouad), near the center of the city.

The Museum includes three floors of exhibits. The first level features artifacts from the Pharaonic period. The walls are decorated in a dark blue - the ancient Egyptian color that symbolized the afterlife.

The second level features artifacts from the Greco-Roman period (circa 500 BC to circa 500 AD, approximately,) during Alexandria's heyday. This level also houses finds from recent underwater excavations conducted around the city, including several notable stone statues from this period. The third floor features Coptic and Islamic treasures and artifacts; the two faiths that have largely shaped the city's history.

A lecture hall and an open air theater for evening performances is now located in what used to be the old garage for the American Consulate's staff. The open-air theater can accommodate an audience of about 800, while the lecture auditorium holds about 150 people.

2011 Egypt Conflict

On January 29, 2011, Hosni Mubarak announced he would dissolve the current Egyptian government.  Mubarak then appointed Omar Suleiman as Egypt's new vice president.  Mubarak did not, however, step down as president.http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/01/201112515334871490.html

On February 6, 2011, after nearly two full weeks of demonstrations in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood (and members of other opposition groups) reportedly met with Egyptian Vice President Suleiman, to discuss key issues.  According to CNN, Suleiman offered some concessions to appease protesters.  Among them: the establishment of committees to ultimately bring about "a representative government."  CNN said a "national committee" will be formed soon "to work on constitutional changes" in the country.http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/02/06/egypt.protests/index.html FOX News said members of the regime also "pledged not to harass" anti-government demonstrators and "not to hamper freedom of the press" or "interfere with text messaging" and access to the Internet.http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/02/06/egypts-brotherhood-hold-talks-government/

One of the key issues discussed is the dissolution of Egypt's so-called "emergency laws," which were put in place when Hosni Mubarak came to power in 1981.  These laws give law enforcement in Egypt "far-reaching powers for detention and suppression of civil and human rights."  According to reports, the Egyptian opposition has long called for the lifting of these laws.http://www.npr.org/2011/02/06/133538495/opposition-groups-meet-egyptian-vice-president

Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa

Open daily 9am to 4:30pm. Admission fee is E£35. The Catacombs are located in the Karmuz Quarter, in an area that was once an ancient fishing village before the city was founded. It's about ten minutes walk from Pompey's Pillar. The site is extremely popular for obvious reasons; the best times to beat the crowds are early in the morning or late afternoon. Be sure to wear shoes that can get dirty or muddy depending on the conditions, (the lower levels may flood when it rains). Some guides recommend a flashlight to fully explore its darker corners. Photography is not allowed to preserve the original decorations.

How To Visit Egypt

There are many accommodations for tourists in Egypt. There are lots of hotels that range both in price and quality. Most tourist hotels however are not the greatest in quality. It is important for tourists to thoroughly research these venues. Cairo is one of the major tourists cities and therefore contains a lot of hotels with quality living quarters. The Oasis, Delta Pyramids and the Royal Gardens are at the top of the list in Cairo.

Being at the top of the list doesn’t come without a price though, many times these hotels do not have vacancies. In Egypt there are also hotels such as the Hilton of Egypt and the Marriot of Cairo. The Golden Rose is the best hotel in Hurghada as well. For the upscale hotels prices generally start out above a hundred dollars a night. Most of these hotels come equipped with beautiful views of Egypt and large swimming pools that make tourists feel like they are in paradise. Be sure to book your lodging accommodations far in advance to ensure a quality stay in Egypt. Movenpick Giza is located outside of the main streets of Egypt giving tourists a feel of the reality of the locals as well as providing the comfort of a high end hotel.http://www.hotelaccommodationdeals.com/Accommodation-Egypt-g22577.html
