Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974
“The
director Julian Jarrold shot the film in Super 16 millimeter, which
gives the images atmospheric grit and swirling grain that, with the
almost comically ubiquitous cigarette smoke, nicely thickens the
air.” - Manohla Dargis, New York Timeshttp://movies.nytimes.com/2010/02/05/movies/05redriding.html
“If you can penetrate the heavy accents and bear a period of disorientation as this complex tale begins to unfold, Red Riding will reward you with one of the most deeply satisfying (and starkly violent) conclusions in cinematic history.” - John P. Meyer, Pegasus Newshttp://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2010/mar/26/movie-review-red-riding-trilogy-1974-1980-1983/

The Strange Case of Angelica
Manoel de Oliveira wrote and directed The Strange Case of Angelica (O Estranho Caso de Angélica), which centers around photographer Isaac, who has been summoned to a house to take photographs of a recently-deceased young woman. When Isaac indulges the family’s wishes and begins to snap his photographs, the young woman briefly comes back to life through his camera lens, and smiles to Isaac. Isaac is shocked to discover that the young woman’s movements were not noticed by her grieving family. Smitten by her appearance, Isaac begins to pine for the young woman, whose apparition begins to appear to him.

Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1980 (film)
“The second movie, “Red Riding:
1980,” glossed up with 35-millimeter film and directed by James
Marsh with an elegant, self-conscious visual style at odds with the
grunge milieu and desperate crimes — dead bodies are as
attractively framed as some clouds reflected in a window...” - Manohla Dargis, New York
Timesc
“As in 1974, obsession appears as a theme, and fatalism as another. But the most noticeable undercurrent here involves an understanding that no investigation can escape the personal shadings cast upon it by its investigator. It's the observer effect translated to a police procedural.” - John P. Meyer, Pegasus Newshttp://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2010/mar/26/movie-review-red-riding-trilogy-1974-1980-1983/

This Is England (film)
“Meadows
boldly attempts to reclaim the skinhead from the traditional neo-Nazi
image, explicitly distinguishing his characters from a separate
racist influence, and presenting them as an anarchic youth tribe that
idolised West Indian music. He sees their susceptibility to the
extremist right as a poignant and even tragic part of their
fatherless culture, literally and figuratively orphaned by the
times.” - Peter Bradshaw, The
Guardianhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2007/apr/27/drama2
“By turns gentle and brutal, “This
Is England” is a humbly, if insistently political, autobiographical
homage to that lost world of youth as well as a lament for its hopes,
pleasures and passionate camaraderie.” - Manhola Dargis, New York
Timeshttp://movies.nytimes.com/2007/07/27/movies/27engl.html

Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1983 (film)
“Although
Mr. Tucker brings welcome warmth and unexpected humor to the series
(thanks mainly to Mr. Addy), he stumbles badly when, after a teasing
buildup, he reveals the marble-white body of a murdered girl who,
while grossly disfigured, also looks as beautiful as a carved Della
Robbia angel. The murderer has turned her ravaged body into an
aesthetic exhibit, an assault Mr. Tucker mimics.” - Manohla Dargis,

“Red
Riding : 1983
undoes a lot of that work by using words to fill in beautiful cracks
and gaps left by powerful images. Its obsession with salvation seems
naïve and very much like a cop out. However, the sheer
banality of 1983’s
evil has a power of its own.” - Johnathan McCalmont, Ruthless
