Pet Crates

When choosing a crate it's important to choose a size which allows the pet to stand up and adjust positions. But it is also not recommended to choose a crate which is too big for the pet because in the event of movement during transportation the pet may not be able to support itself safely in an area which is too big. There are also different types to accommodate one's needs. Wired Crates are more durable and give the pet less of a feeling of claustrophobia, but exposes the animal to the elements, it is especially effective when dealing with situations when one needs to keep a steady eye on a pet like a medical situation or with puppies. Soft Crates address issues of storage since they are often collapsible and light weight, but they are also less sturdy and not recommended for vehicle transportation or anxious pets who can chew or scratch their way out of the crate. Plastic or Solid Crates are the standard for air travel and provide more privacy, and coverage, they also provide the best protection from the elements while creating a den like experience for the pet.

American Curl

The relatively thin under coat of the Curl requires very little grooming. Its unique ear structure may occasionally need cleaned, but on the whole the Curl is an easy to maintain cat. Regular veterinarian checkups are recommended, as with any pets, and yearly shots.

American Wirehair

Due to hybrid vigor, American Wirehair cats are generally free of diseases and genetic problems. These cats seem to have sensitive skin and are prone to allergies. Owners will find it important to keep the coat clean with regular grooming and bathing. This is also helpful in dealing with the slightly oily skin of the breed, something they have in common with breeds of Rex Cats. Along with the oily skin, there seems to be more production of dark ear wax which should be routinely cleaned from the ears.

Because of the consistency of the hair and its implications in hairball formation, owners need to follow regular steps to prevent hairballs including routine grooming, feeding of a hairball preventing food and other hairball remedies that may be purchased through a veterinarian or pet supply catalog.

How to Groom a Cat

If your cat gets into something sticky or smelly, or her coat begins to get too oily, you will need to bath her.

First, however, make sure you have clipped her nails. Clipping nails is easy, but you have to be very careful not to cut into the quick, which will bleed. If your cat's nails are clear or white, it should be easy to see where the quick (the darker portion of the nail) starts and clip above it using cat nail clippers. If the cat's nails are dark, clip at the very tip of the nail, or ask your vet to clip them when you bring her in for a checkup.

If you need to give your cat a bath, it will help to have another person there to hold her. Place a mat or towel at the bottom of the sink and run some warm water into it. Holding your cat firmly, place her into the sink then gently ladle the water over her to dampen her skin. Then, still holding her firmly, put some cat shampoo onto her and lather it (following the directions on the bottle), carefully avoiding her eyes and face. Try to have someone keep a firm hold on her the whole time. Often she will struggle less if she doesn't feel like she has a chance of escaping. Thoroughly wash out the shampoo. This is important, as your cat will groom herself later and may swallow the shampoo if ...

How to Bathe a Cat

When removing your kitty from the wash area, you'll want to first lift him out with a towel. After doing this, rub the cat dry to best of your ability before turning on the hair dryer. When using the hair dryer, be sure not to use an older one that is too loud or one that does not have a low setting. High settings and loud dryers can startle cats that may already be slightly agitated by receiving a bath.http://www.pets.ca/pettips/tips-87.htm

This part is again dependent upon the coat of the cat, as not all require air drying. Short-haired cats will generally dry on their own, so a thorough towel dry will do. Medium- and long-haired cats, however, tend to mat easier, so it is important that a dryer be used post-bath. Sometimes, especially in the case of medium-haired cats, only a dryer is necessary. However, long-haired and exotic breeds such as Persians should be brushed while being dried in order to prevent excess tangling.http://www.iams.com/iams/pet-health/cat-grooming.jsp?gclid=CIPSmbPv-KACFQOF7Qod2GSGwQ

After being dried, you and your kitty can reap the benefits of the bath. While you might find yourself sneezing less or using your pet hair roller less often, your cat might show off her bright, healthy coat or have found some relief from her hairballs. Cat bathing, when done properly, may be beneficial to both the cat and the owner.
