Filet Mignon

Restaurant menus may often describe a steak without delineating the inclusion of filet mignon. Menus offering "medallions" usually mean filet, referring to the shape of the meat when served with bone. A Porterhouse steak refers to a large cut, served with the bone, that includes both the strip steak and the filet.

How to Make Beef Kebabs

  1. If you are using wooden skewers, they have to be prepared. As the beef is marinating, soak the wooden bamboo skewers for at least half an hour in water. This will prevent the skewers for catching on fire and burning.http://www.hungrymonster.com/FoodFacts/Food_Facts.cfm?Phrase_vch=Kebabs&fid=11328
  2. Prepare the beef by cutting into bite sized pieces, about 1 to 2 inch cubes. This will help the beef cook faster, but stay tender and moist and cook at the same rate as any vegetable added onto the skewer.http://www.hungrymonster.com/FoodFacts/Food_Facts.cfm?Phrase_vch=Kebabs&fid=11328
  3. Cut the vegetables relatively the same size as the beef cubes. Then marinate using the same marinade as the beef in a separate mixing bowl for the same amount of time as the beef. Some vegetables may not need as long of a marinating time. Some of the denser vegetables may need to be blanched before marinating and cooking.http://www.hungrymonster.com/FoodFacts/Food_Facts.cfm?Phrase_vch=Kebabs&fid=11328
  4. If the beef kebabs are marinating for a short period of time such as under half an hour, all of the beef and vegetable ingredients may be place on a skewer and marinated together.http://www.hungrymonster.com/FoodFacts/Food_Facts.cfm?Phrase_vch=Kebabs&fid=11328

How to Cook Steak

  • Now that you've cooked your steak to perfection, the time has come for the finishing touches.
  1. Remove the steak from the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes, covering with aluminum foil if you prefer. This locks in the juices that make it tender.http://www.ffwdmag.com/living0701-2.htm
  2. Use this time to set the table or finish any side dishes you've been working on. Asparagus and potatoes both go well with steak!
  3. Now to ask the final question: to flavor or not to flavor? Some people enjoy putting steak sauce, horseradish sauce, or other seasonings on their steak. Others simply prefer the juicy flavor of the steak itself. It's all up to you!
  • Now there's only one thing left to do: enjoy the fruits (or meats) of your labor! If this one didn't come out quite how you wanted, keep trying. With a little practice, you'll wonder why you ever thought it was hard!

How to Grill Filet Mignon

Now that your filets have been properly chosen and prepared for the grill, it's time to start cooking. To begin, a gas powered grill should preheat and reach a medium to high temperature. It may take approximately 15 minutes to reach the desired temperature for searing. By first searing a filet mignon, the juices of the meat will be trapped inside and prevent the cut from drying out. When using a charcoal grill, allow the coals to reach a red hot color and when there is a bit of ash produced, the grill is hot enough to sear the meat. http://www.perfectsear.com/grilling/how-to-grill-filet-mignon

Once the meat has been seared properly, finish grilling the filet by reducing the temperature. If using a charcoal grill, push the coals to one side and cook the filet on the other. Gas grill settings should be reduced and the filets should be moved off of direct flames. Cover the grill and allow the meat to cook for approximately 5-7 minutes on each side. The exact time will depend on the thickness of the cut and the how well you would like the filet mignon to be.http://www.perfectsear.com/grilling/how-to-grill-filet-mignon
