Merdeka Square
The square is a public space and so is open for visitors 24/7. It is a great place to sit and admire the city centre from afar. Annually Malaysians celebrate their independence on the 31st of August at this site. There is the Merdeka Day Parade marched through here, and much festivities in the rest of the city also.
Getting There: Take the PUTRA Kelana Jaya Line or the LRT to Masjid Jamek station. The square is a short 10 minute walk from there.
There is a memorable fountain named the 'Pitcherplant Fountain' just north of the square. Also terraces, other fountains and brightly coloured gardens. The field is was originally owned by the Selangor Club, founded in 1884, for cricket. The club was a social meeting place for those with colonial power. http://www.malaysiavacationguide.com/dataran-merdeka.html The nearby National Museum was opened in 1966 and is worth a visit to learn more about Malaysia's history.
Merdeka Square is a popular venue for open air concerts, carnivals, marathons, etc. Occassionally they have a cricket match in memorial of the colonial days. Beneath the square is an underground foodcourt and entertainment complex.http://www.malaysiasite.nl/merdekaeng.htm
