• Episode 1: A Shinigami Is Born!: Ichigo Krosaki, who is a 15-year-old boy, is the hero of the show with the ability to see ghosts. The episodes starts out with Ichigo helping a young girl ghost. The next day, Ichigo finds her again, but this time she is about to get eaten by a monster. However, a soul reaper, Rukia Kuchiki comes and saves both Ichigo and the girl. Rukia is surprised that Ichigo, a human, can see her due to her being a spirit. While Rukia is visiting Ichigo, a Hollow monster appears and attacks and terrorizes, Ichigo, Ichigo's family, and Rukia. Rurouni Kenshin

All three series of the original anime series are available to buy on DVD.

Two OVAs featuring the Rurouni Kenshin characters and story are available on DVD.

Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (1999) contains events occurring in the past, from the standpoint of the main anime series. It delves into Kenshin’s bloody past as Battosai the Manslayer, and reveals events leading to his abandonment of his lifestyle of killing.

‘’Samurai X: Reflection’’ (2001) is exactly that – reflections on the life of Kenshin Himura, from the standpoint of Kaoru Kamiya. It involves events of both the past and future from the standpoint of the original anime.

Both the OVA features were praised for their fluidity and quality of animation, and have been called one of the crowning achievements of anime by reviewers. Both presentations are far darker and more adult in subject matter and tone than the anime. ‘’Trust & Betrayal’’ received positive reviews for the action sequences and story, while ‘’Reflection’’, despite its excellent animation, met with some disappointment due to level of divergence from the original character styles. The story of ‘’Reflection’’ was not written or approved by the creator of the franchise, Nobuhiro Watsuki.
