Cries and Whispers (1973 Film)

"Crying for help in a world they can neither cope with nor comprehend, [Bergman's] characters confront a silent universe inhabited by a God whose attitude is at best uncaring, at worst malignant. How the individual adjusts to his plight remains Bergman's central concern, and in Cries and Whispers he provides a bravado portrait of four women in this barren emotional landscape."&mdashVarietyhttp://www.variety.com/review/VE1117796139.html?categoryid=31&cs=1

"More a rough draft for a Bergman movie than a finished product, this 1972 film promises much and delivers little or nothing."—Don Druker, Chicago Readerhttp://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/cries-and-whispers/Film?oid=1073042

"Bergman never made another film this painful. To see it is to touch the extremes of human feeling. It is so personal, so penetrating of privacy, we almost want to look away."—Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Timeshttp://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20020818/REVIEWS08/208180301/1023

"In order to understand why Cries and Whispers is a great film, it must be experienced, not merely watched."James Berardinelli, Reelviewshttp://www.reelviews.net/php_review_template.php?identifier=859

Norma Rae (1979 Film)

"In short, swift, effective scenes "Norma Rae" dramatizes the limits imposed on imaginations by both poverty and tradition."—The New York Times'http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/review?res=980DE3D81139E732A25751C0A9659C946890D6CF&partner=Rotten%20Tomatoes

Camera Buff

"None of the humor is excessive or intrusive, but there are moments of the absurd that maintain a relaxed tone, and Filip's enthusiasm is infectious. Kieslowski isn't attempting to bludgeon us with preachy morality lessons; his intent is to explore certain issues in an entertaining manner. And, while Camera Buff lacks some of the artistry evident in the director's later projects, it's worth seeing not only as an example of Kieslowski's early work, but as an important film in its own right." — James Berardinelli, Reel Reviewshttp://www.reelviews.net/movies/c/camera.html

"Suffused with Kieslowski's dry wit and intelligence, this early feature provides an excellent introduction to his work." — Johnathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Readerhttp://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/camera-buff/Film?oid=1062963

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie

"The movie is not savage or angry, but bemused and cynical. Bunuel was 72 when he directed it. "It belongs both to his old age and to his second childhood," says A.O. Scott. Backed by the French producer Serge Silberman, he was free at last to indulge his fancies, and "Discreet Charm" is liberated from any commercial or narrative requirement" — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Timeshttp://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20000625/REVIEWS08/6250301/1023

"Buñuel repeatedly takes on the gross presumptuousness of his characters--their unwillingness to admit defeat and to take things only at face value." — Ed Gonzalez, Slant Magazinehttp://www.slantmagazine.com/film/review/the-discreet-charm-of-the-bourgeoisie/724

Dersu Uzala

Based on the memoirs of pre-Soviet Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev (Yury Solomin), 1975's Dersu Uzala was one of Akira Kurosawa's most ambitious undertakings. One of the Japanese director's few works filmed in a language other than his native language, Dersu Uzala was shot in Siberia while the Soviet Union was still very much alive. The plot concerns Arsenyev's friendship with Dersu Uzala, a nomadic tribesman, and contemplates the effects of modernity, particularly the loss of indigenous cultures. Newsweek called the film, "an awesome portrait of man and nature." In 1993, actor Solomin was honored in Japan for his performance.

The Fury (1978 Film)

"The movie that draws the deepest line in the sand between De Palma apologists and De Palma maniacs."Eric Henderson, Slant Magazinehttp://www.slantmagazine.com/film/film_review.asp?ID=2491

"This more streamlined thriller about another telekinetic girl (Amy Irving) has few supporters, but it revealed further development in De Palma's storytelling skills."Jeffrey M. Anderson, Combustible Celluloidhttp://www.combustiblecelluloid.com/classic/fury78.shtml

Soylent Green

While investigating the murder of a director of the processed food manufacturer Soylent, Heston's character, detective Robert Thorn, uncovers a broader and more sinister crime. In a world without books, where people are confined to cities and where overpopulation has led to limited food supply and riots, a new food source has been manufactured, supposedly from a mixture of soy beans and lentils. However, during a murder investigation, Thorn discovers that the real ingredient behind the product is recycled protein from a very unusual source: deceased human beings.
