NHL Career
Tony Granato was drafted by the New York Rangers in 1982. He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin, and after graduation, committed to the U.S. National team and participated in the 1988 Olympics. Coaching Career
Tony Granato became the assistant coach of the Colorado Avalanche on June 18, 2002. Six months later he became the head coach, leading the Avalanche to their ninth consecutive division title.Official Site of the Colorado Avalanche: Tony Granato Head CoachAt the end of the 2004 season, assistant coach Rick Tocchet retired unexpectedly. Former Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville had recently been released from the St. Louis Blues, and the Avalanche took the opportunity to bring him back into the organization, moving Granato back to assistant in order to give Quenville the head coach position.
