Tonsillitis

  • Tonsillitis occurs when the tonsils become infected with a virus or bacterium that causes them to become red, swollen and painful. In most cases, tonsillitis is caused by a virus, so antibiotics cannot be used to treat it. Reoccurring tonsillitis used to be treated by removing the tonsils, but a tonsillectomy is no longer recommended unless other treatments fail to work.WebMD: Tonsillitis - Topic Overview

If the tonsillitis is caused by the bacteria that causes strep throat, antibiotics will be prescribed. However, if the tonsillitis is caused by a virus, it will usually go away on its own. The goal of treatment is to treat the uncomfortable symptoms of tonsillitis. Taking over-the-counter pain relievers will help ease the pain. Also, gargling with salt water and drinking warm tea and broths can be helpful.MedlinePlus: Medical Encyclopedia: Tonsillitis
