Tomislav Nikolic is the Speaker of Parliament in Serbia, and is the acting leader of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) while its elected leader Vojislav Šešelj is on trial in the Netherlands for war crimes. Nikolic has run multiple campaigns for President of Serbia, and lost by a narrow margin in the 2008 election.
War Crime Implications
Although Vojislav Šešelj is officially on trial for war crimes, Nikolic has himself been been implicated in, but not formally charged with war crimes. Nikolic was stationed in the village of Antin, during a 1991 massacre of several elderly civilians. Nikolic claims that there were no civilian deaths, and that he had not personally fired a single shot while stationed there. And official Croatian investigation concluded that there is no direct evidence of Nikolic's involvement.
