Mythological Story
In Tomb Raider Underworld, Lara Croft has discovered proof of the existence of the mythical hammer of the Norse god, Thor. Legend says that anyone who can wield this powerful weapon will have the ability to smash mountains and the strength to even bring down a god. Lara, being the artifact hunter that she is, goes in search of the hammer, but soon finds out she's not the only one on the hunt.Official Site: Tomb Raider Underworld StoryIn writing the story for the game, Crystal Dynamics, the game's developer, traveled to multiple places all over the world in order to learn the history and culture related to the myths they wanted to include. The story actually ties together a number of different cultures and their histories, forming a massive new mythology that spans the entire globe.GameTrailers: Tomb Raider Underworld Behind the Scenes: Story

Basic Movement Controls
- Press A to jump. Press A while moving forward to perform a running jump. Jump into surface edges to grab onto them.
- Press A to climb up any ledge Lara is clinging to. To drop down while hanging from a ledge press B. Note that if the ledge is too small to be climbed and the A button is pressed, Lara will shimmy jump straight upwards instead.
- To leap directly away from a ledge that Lara is hanging from, hold the left analog in the direction you wish to leap and press the A button.
- Hold B to crouch-walk. Use the crouch-walk to move under obstacles and traps. Press B while running to perform a forward roll instead.
- Press X to fire your grapple gun. If there is a grappling target in range, Lara will automatically grapple it. The game will provide visual cues in the form of blue symbols that will alert the player to a nearby grappling object.
- Whenever an object is grappled, pressing Y will cause Lara to pull on the grappling line. This has a number of uses, from yanking objects forward to climbing up a vertical grappling line. Press B to release a grappled object.
- If Lara is swinging on a grappling line, her momentum can be increased by rocking the left analog up and down. Push the analog left or right to turn Lara in mid-swing.
- Some objects, such as switches and movable blocks, can be interacted with if you are within range and press the Y button. These objects are marked with a yellow symbol.
- Some objects can be picked up with the Y button. Press B to drop them onto the ground. Press the right bumper to throw the object. Press Y to use the object as a melee weapon. At times, objects can be used to interact with other elements, using the Y button while in range.
- Hold the left bumper to sprint. To "sprint" along ledges and ladders (known as "fast traversing"), tap the Y button repeatedly instead.
- Press up on the d-pad to use any stored health pickups.
- Press left on the d-pad to turn on/off Lara's utility light.
- Press down on the d-pad to use/put away Lara's field camera. Use the left trigger to zoom out and the right trigger to zoom in.
- Use the right analog to move the camera. Click down the left analog to center the camera behind Lara.

Advanced Movement Controls
- Lara can hang onto/leap on flag poles to clear gaps and reach heights above. While hanging from a flag pole, Tap A to perch onto it. Press B to return to a hanging position. To vault off a flag pole from a hanging position, hold the left analog in the direction you wish to vault, and Lara will begin to spin on the pole, after which press A to launch your vault.
- Some flag poles can be yanked out of their position. If the pole is "removable", then face the pole's insertion point from a hanging position and press Y to yank out the pole.
- Lara can scale pillars and column-like structures small enough to wrap her legs around. While clinging to a pillar, press up on the left analog to scale up, down to scale down. To jump directly away from a pillar you are clinging to, tap A. Some pillar tops have just enough surface for Lara to stand on and hop to and from. If its possible, you can climb down from a pillar top to the pillar sides by pressing B.
- Lara can stand on small "balance beam"-like structures. Press A to climb up a balance beam from a hanging position; press B to return to a hanging position. When walking on a balance beam, tap left and right on the left analog to keep Lara steady, or release the left analog to stop and balance Lara.
- If Lara's grip is ever weakened, a yellow symbol will appear; press Y before its too late to recover your grip (also known as a safety grab). Grabbing a ledge after falling too far often requires a safety grab to keep from falling.
- Lara can leap into a sheer surface and rebound away from it (called a wall jump). To wall jump, press A when Lara crouches up against a wall after jumping into it. In some situations, Lara can chain several wall jumps together for a "chimney jump" (the maximum possible is five chained wall jumps).
-
Advanced Grappling Controls
- Grapple lines can wrap around surfaces. The line will break off if it is laid out too far.
- Lara can rappel down a surface using a grapple point. Latch onto a grapple point, then walk backwards off of the edge of the surface to rappel. Hold Y and up or down on the left analog to scale up or down.
- If Lara is standing directly under a grapple point, she can rappel up or down from that spot. To climb/rappel up a surface from the ground, fire at the grappling point, then stand directly under it and press A to begin rappelling.
- Press left or right on the left analog while rappelling to perform a "grapple wall run". Rock the analog left and right to build movement. Lara can leap from a wall she is running on; use the left analog in tandem with the A button to guide Lara's leap.
-
Basic Combat Controls
- Press the right trigger to fire your equipped weapon. To alternate amongst your equipped weapons, press right on the d-pad.
- Press the left trigger to lock onto an object. Use the right analog to switch between targets. Note that the player can also use the "precision aiming" mode (click down the right analog) to manually aim towards any target.
- Press Y to perform a standing melee attack. Pressing Y while running will perform a running attack. The Y button can also be used to dislodge small enemies.
- Press the right bumper to throw a grenade (should Lara have one in her inventory).
-
-
Advanced Combat Controls
- To dodge while in combat, lock onto an enemy, then hold the left analog in the direction you wish to dodge and press A or B.
- To vault over an enemy while in combat, lock onto an enemy, then when in range, hold the left analog in the enemy's direction and press A.
- If Lara is knocked down by a powerful attack, mash A or B to recover quickly.
- General combat will build up Lara's "adrenaline meter". When Lara has any amount stored, she can concentrate fire on a single target for massive damage. To concentrate fire on a target, lock onto the target, and click down on the right analog.
- If the adrenaline meter is completely filled, Lara can perform a one-hit-kill on almost any enemy using the "Adrenaline Headshot". To perform an Adrenaline Headshot, lock onto a target, get in range and press X. Quickly guide the red targeting reticule onto the target's head and fire with the right trigger before time runs out.
- Lara will automatically target two enemies at once if she is equipped with dual weapons (such as the pistols) and the opportunity arises.
-
Swim Controls
- Press A to swim directly towards the surface. Press B to submerge directly away from it.
- Use the right analog to change the aim of the game's camera underwater. The left analog can then be used to swim Lara in a direction based on how the camera is aimed.
- Hold the left bumper for a fast swim. Note that fast swimming for too long will eventually tire Lara, causing her swim to slow down considerably until after a brief rest.
- The B button can be used to perform an evasive maneuver when Lara is locked onto an enemy underwater.
- To swan dive, press A and forward on the left analog, then immediately press B afterward. The swan dive is used to unlock certain achievements.
-
Motorbike Controls

- Right trigger to accelerate
- Left trigger to brake
- A or B button to emergency brake. Use it in conjunction with the left analog to power steer.
- Y to mount or dismount the bike.
- Left on d-pad to turn the bike's high beams on or off.

-
PDA Controls
- Press the Back key to access the PDA.
- Use the Sonar Map to create a 3D rendering of the immediate area. Guide yourself along the map with the analogs and the triggers. Press Y to reset it back to Lara's location.
- Use "Area Info" to keep track of the treasures and relics collected for the current level.
- Use "Weapon Selection" to switch between your secondary weapons. The submachine guns are good for multiple targets. The assault rifle has excellent range. The shotgun has excellent damage and stopping power. The harpoon gun is made for underwater use. The tranquilizer gun will instantly knock out any enemy, however, sleeping victims will awaken later unless they are killed, and the gun has no effect against Thralls.
- Use "Inventory" to check your stocks of health packs and total amounts of treasures and relics collected.
- Use "Field Assistance" to receive hints and tips from Lara.
- Read more details about the game's story in "Journal" (new additions to the journal are unlocked throughout the game).
