Introduction to Film
While in college studying the classics, a classmate asked Stern to photograph a movie he was working on. Stern says, "I had no idea of what to do, so I read the ASC Manual from beginning to end". Stern shared the nomination with four other cinematographers, Claudio Miranda for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Wally Pfister for The Dark Knight, Chris Menges and Roger Deakins for The Reader and Anthony Dod Mantle for Slumdog Millionaire. Claudio Miranda, Anthony Dod Mantle and Tom Stern are all first-time nominees. Mantle received the award for his work on Slumdog Millionaire.
