University of Minnesota forward Tom Pohl was seriously injured during the second period of the Gophers game against the Minnesota State University Mavericks. Pohl was elbowed in the head by Maverick Jason Wiley and fell face first into the ice. Pohl was flown to the Mayo Clinic, where he underwent surgery to stop bleeding in his brain. He was later listed in fair condition.

- Pohl lost his helmet as he was falling and apparently hit the dasher in front of the Gophers' bench. There was a 13-minute delay as Pohl, who had a large gash on his forehead and was also bleeding from his nose, was immobilized and taken off in a stretcher.
