After playing in two bands, he went solo in the late '60s and soon scored big hits with songs like "Hello It's Me" and "Can We Still Be Friends." The prolific musician released an album almost every year of the 1970s, and in the '80s he released another signature song, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In 2006, Rundgren became the new frontman of new wave rockers The Cars (under the moniker "The New Cars"). The band performs a mixture of Rundgren's songs and popular Cars songs.
