After attending Osbourne High School in Marietta, Georgia, Jones was drafted by the New York Mets in the 41st round of the 1986 amateur draft. Jones declined to sign a contract, and instead went on to play baseball at Jacksonville State University. The Houston Astros drafted Jones in the 1st round of the 1989 draft. Jones made his major league debut for the Astros on July 7, 1993. After four seasons with the Astros, Jones was traded along with Doug Brocail, Brian Hunter, Orlando Miller, and cash to the Tigers for Brad Ausmus, Jose Lima, Trever Miller, C.J. Nitkowski, and Daryle Ward. After a four year stint as the Tigers closer, Jones would go on to play for the Twins, Rockies, Red Sox, Reds, Phillies, and Marlins, before signing a free agent contract to return to Detriot in 2005.MLB.com: Tood Jones Bio
