American Todd Bachman was stabbed to death at the Drum Tower in Beijing, China, a popular monument and tourist attraction, on August 9, the first day of the 2008 Olympics. Bachman was the father-in-law to Hugh McCutcheon, the U.S. Olympic men's indoor volleyball head coach. He was attacked, alongside wife Barbara Bachman, daughter Elisabeth Bachman-McCutcheon and his Chinese tour guide, by 47-year-old man Chinese man Tang Yongming, who jumped from the tower to his death moments later. Bachman was 62 years old.
