Thirty Mile Zone
The acronym TMZ stands for "Thirty Mile Zone," a term that is often used to describe the 30 mile radius in and around the Hollywood/Los Angeles area where most of the celebrities they cover live and work.
The term was originally coined in the 1960s to describe the area that Hollywood film crews could shoot in without being referred to as on location. Studios that shoot outside of the thirty mile zone are required to cover the travel and living expenses of its employees and include a per diem for each day of shooting.
