On February 23, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI named Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan as the next archbishop of New York. 59-year-old Dolan, who succeeds the retiring Cardinal Edward Egan, was installed on April 15, 2009.

The position of Archbishop of New York is considered the "most prominent" position in the U.S. Roman Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI officially named Timothy Dolan as the successor to the retiring 76-year-old Cardinal Edward Egan, in February 2009. Dolan was welcomed at a Mass held at St. Patrick's Cathedral on the morning of Monday, February 23. As Archbishop of New York, Dolan will lead an estimated 2.5 million Roman Catholic parishioners.
