Tim Johnson is a U.S. Senator from the state of South Dakota. On December 13, 2006, Johnson suffered a brain hemorrhage which nearly took his life. While hospitalized, speculation grew that should if he was to pass away, the South Dakota governor would appoint a Republican to take his place, returning the state to Republican Party rule. However, Johnson returned to his seat on September 5, 2007, in good health, after a ten-month absence. In 2008, Johnson won re-election to his Senate seat.

Viewed by many as a moderate Democrat, Johnson was in favor of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, a measure to reform cash assistance to the poor. He also supported a bill to repeal the ban on semiautomatic weapons. Johnson chairs both the subcommittee of financial institutions and water and power.
