Hightower attended Episcopal High School in Alexandra, Virginia, where he earned All-State honors in both his junior and senior years. He was the team MVP and served as team captain for his last two years. In addition to earning three letters in football, he twice lettered in both basketball and track. Hightower started all 16 games for the Arizona Cardinals in 2009 , finishing with 143 carries for 598 yards and eight touchdowns - Hightower was second on the team in rushing to Beanie Wells. He also had 63 receptions for 428 yards. Hightower had a career-high 110 rushing yards on 14 carries in the Cardinals' 21-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams on November 22. After the Cardinals went 7-3 in the 2008-2009 season, head coach Ken Whisenhunt made the decision to replace starting running back Edgerrin James with Hightower as the team's featured back. Hightower earned Division I-AA first-team All-America honors and was a unanimous All-Colonial Athletic Association first-teamer as a senior for Richmond in 2007 after setting school single-season rushing records for yardage (1,924) and touchdowns (20). His 137.4-yard average per game ranked sixth in the nation.
