Tim Donaghy was a referee for the NBA from 1994 to 2007. In 2008, Donaghy pleaded guilty to conspiring with gamblers and allegedly affected the outcomes of games he was officiating by manipulating point spreads.The New York Times: N.B.A. Referee Is the Focus of a Federal Inquiry (July 21, 2007) He has been sentenced to 15 months in prison.

On July 14, 2008 it was reported that Tim Donaghy made 134 phone calls to referee Scott Foster between October 2006 and April 2007. The phone calls lasted less than two minutes and occurred before and after games that Donaghy officiated. The calls were made during the games that Donaghy admits wagering on.
