Tim Berners-Lee, also known as Sir Timothy Berners-Lee, invented the World Wide Web while working at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. The project was initially proposed in 1989 as a global hypertext project. The project was conceived to facilitate the sharing of knowledge among researchers by means of hypertext documents. Coding for the project began in October 1990. The WorldWideWeb program was first put to use in December of 1990 within CERN and then on the Internet in the summer of 1991.
Major contributions
Tim founded the World Wide Web Consortium in 1994. He is director of the Consortium which is headquartered at the Computer Science and [[Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The organization is responsible for managing the development of standards that guide the direction of the World Wide Web.
In 1999 he authored Weaving the Web, which captures the early history and evolution of the web and describes the direction it should take to become the web of data.
In addition to numerous awards for technical excellent and contributions to technology, Time was Knighted in 2004 by H.M. the Queen.
