His NFL career spanned ten years in total, from 1997 to 2007. Beginning in 1997 Barber was first drafted into the New York Giants. Just prior to being drafted, he played football at the University of Virginia. During the 2006 season, one year prior to his retirement from the NFL, Barber became the 21^st player to have successfully rushed for over 10,000 years throughout his football career.

After retiring in 2007, Barber became a sports announcer for NBC. In addition to covering sports-related news for NBC's various sports shows and channels, Barber has also been a contributor for the network's long-running flagship programs, The Today Show.
