The Tibet Autonomous Region is the province of Tibet, as defined by China. It encompasses approximately half of the total area of the historical Tibetan kingdom occupied at its largest and is roughly equivalent to the boundaries of Tibet as it existed immediately prior to annexation in 1959. Since economic reforms and the opening of tourism in the 1980s the Tibet Autonomous Region has undergone intense economic development. Many Tibetans criticize this development, however, arguing that, while Chinese migrants benefit, Tibetan culture has been marginalized as a tourism commodity.
