Thyroid disease is a disorder of the thyroid which is responsible for the body's metabolism. With thyroid disease the metabolism is either too slow or too fast.
Symptoms
Thyroid disease varies depending on the specific thyroid problem. Common symptoms include mood changes, weight loss or gain, irregular menstrual cycles and sensitivity to hold or cold.
Treatment
Treatment of thyroid disease is based on the type of the disease. Common treatments include medication, radiation therapy and sometimes surgery.

The thyroid gland is located at the lower part of the front of the neck. It controls the energy consumption in the body through hormones it produces. Heart rate, temperature and metabolism are controlled by the thyroid.
