Deanna Durbin, Universal Pictures answer to Judy Garland and Shirley Temple, first achieved stardom in the 1936 film Three Smart Girls, directed by Henry Koster. Credited with helping Universal survive the economic depression, the film generated two lesser watched sequels, Three Smart Girls Grow Up and Hers to Hold.
Plot Synopsis
Sisters Penny, Joan and Kay Craig, played by Deanna Durbin, Nan Grey and Barbara Read, respectively, are living in Switzerland with their mother when they learn that their father is remarrying. Wanting to have their parents back together, the girls go to their father's New York City home, determined to keep him from marrying young gold-digger Donna Lyons, played by Binnie Barnes.
