Thomas Van Flein

  • Thomas Van Flein is an Alaskan lawyer who was hired on August 21, 2008 to represent Governor Sarah Palin's office in the investigation into the firing of former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. Van Flein replaced Attorney General Talis Colberg, who has a perceived conflict of interest in the ongoing proceedings.

The investigation involves whether Monegan was pressured into firing State Trooper Mike Wooten, Palin's ex-brother-in-law, and whether Monegan was ultimately fired because he wouldn't do so. Colberg has admitted he contacted Monegan about Wooten, which makes him a potential witness in the case.

On September 2, 2008, Van Flein challenged the legality of the proceedings, stating that the proper venue for such investigations is the state Personnel Board, not the Legislature, an opinion rejected by the director of the investigation, Hollis French.ADN: Attorney challenges ... firing inquiry (September 2, 2008)
