Thimerosal, or thiomersal, is an organomercurial compound, an organic substance that contains mercury. It has been used as a preservative in vaccines and other drugs since the 1930s. Organomercurial substances have been suspected of causing autism. Because of this risk, the FDA has been working to limit or remove the quantities of thimerosal found in vaccines.FDA: Thimerosal in Vaccines
