Washington DC-based Thievery Corporation is the moniker of electronic music producers and DJs Rob Garza and Eric Hilton. The duo has evolved a downtempo, electronic "lounge" sound informed by a host of world music influences including dub reggae, Indian classical music and bossa nova.
The two met in 1995 at DC's Eighteenth Street Lounge from which they would take the moniker of their independent record label Eighteen Street Lounge Music (ESL Music). In addition to Thievery Corporation's own releases, ESL Music hosts a consortium of acts with similarly eclectic influences.
In addition to their own original productions, featured on such albums as Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi and The Mirror Conspiracy, the duo has recorded remixes for such artists as David Byrne.
Their music has been used in numerous commercials, films and television shows including Alias and the Zach Braff film Garden State.
