Thermometers

A thermometer is an instrument used to measure temperature. Thermometers are used in a variety of ways including measuring air temperature, in cooking and in medicine to determine body temperature.

History

Although various forms of measuring temperature dates back to the First Century, one of the first thermometers was created in 1638 by Robert Fludd, using the expansion of air as a basic for determining temperature. The theory advanced in the 1700s, when mercury was first used in place of air to determine temperature.
