Reviews for Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler were mostly positive upon its run on the film festival circuit. Stephen Farber from The Hollywood Reporter praised the "outstanding" performances by Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood, even calling Mickey Rourke's a "career-best."The Hollywood Reporter: The Wrestler Review (September 4, 2008)
Todd McCarthy of Variety compared Rourke's "galvanizing, humorous, deeply moving" portrayal of protagonist Randy "the Ram" Robinson to other "great, iconic screen performances."
