The University of Tokyo, also known as Todai, is the oldest national university in Japan. It is known as a leading research university and offers both undergraduate and graduate level courses.

It was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan, bringing together several older government schools for medicine and Western learning. It was renamed "the Imperial University" in 1886 and then "Tokyo Imperial University" in 1887. Kashiwa Campus
The University of Tokyo's Kashiwa Campus is the newest campus. It was designed for "adventures in knowledge", programs focusing on the renovation of the structure of knowledge creation. It houses the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research and the Research into Artifacts and several other cutting edge technology departments.
