The Turn of the Screw is a 19th Century novella in which a new governess suspects her two young charges, Miles and Flora, of consorting with sinister spirits and battles to save them.
New Criticism
New Criticism was a dominant trend in English and American literary criticism of the mid-20th Century. It advocated a close reading and attention to texts themselves, and rejected criticism based on extra-textual sources, especially biography. The book became a favorite of this movement. New Critics allege the reader of The Turn of the Screw is challenged to determine if the protagonist is reliably reporting events or instead is some kind of neurotic with an overheated imagination.
