The Star Wars Holiday Special is two hour television special that aired just one time, in 1978, on CBS. Han Solo and Chewbacca travel to Chewbacca's home planet, Kashyyyk, to spend the annual Life Day celebration with Chewie's family.
Meanwhile, Darth Vader's Imperial Stormtroopers are raiding the local cantinas and destroying homes in traditional Star Wars behavior but rather than the iconic aliens found in the catina in Star Wars, this television special features Bea Arthur (Golden Girls singing a tune in the bar. Diahann Carroll also makes a guest appearance as the virtual reality fantasy of Chewie's father and Harvey Korman is an alien chef.LA Times: May the Farce Be with You (November 16, 2008)
Quotes
- "I think it's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. It makes you want to reach behind the scenes and imagine how it all happened. You have to ask, Who approved it? Where was the fail-safe point?"—Mike NelsonLA Times: May the Farce Be with You (November 16, 2008)
- "Star Wars was just so hot, and in those days, television specials were all about taking the hottest movie phenomenon and capitalizing on the audience. There were all kinds of specials. The year before, I worked on The Paul Lynde Halloween Special with Margaret Hamilton, KISS, Florence Henderson and Witchy Poo from H.R. Pufnstuf. So a Star Wars Holiday Special made perfect sense."—Bruce Vilanch, The Star Wars Holiday Special co-writerLA Times: May the Farce Be with You (November 16, 2008)
