The Staple Singers were a gospel and R&B group formed by the family's patriarch Roebuck "Pops" Staples. Pops Staples and his children, Cleotha, Pervis, Yvonne and Mavis, began performing in Chicago-area churches in 1948. They signed their first professional recording contract in 1952Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: The Staple Singers (2007)
While the group was on several labels over the course of their career, they are famously associated with the Stax record label on which they released their chart-topping sings "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There."
They were named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and in 2005, the group was given a Grammy Award for Lifetime AchievementRock and Roll Hall of Fame: The Staple Singers (2007)
