  • The Smiths are widely considered to be the definitive British Indie rock band of the 1980s. The band formed in Manchester, England in 1982 and between 1984 and 1987, led by enigmatic frontman Steven Morrissey, released four studio albums to much critical acclaim.

  • Musical style

Morrissey's distinctive voice is the most identifiable feature of the band's musical style. The tone of his lyrics range from dry wit to bleak desperation, often within the same song. Their guitarist Johnny Marr is also credited for the band's great success due to his songwriting that featured intricate guitar work.

  • Rise to popularity

Although the Smiths' initial releases did not perform spectacularly well on the UK's charts, they won the respect of prominent music critics. Their focus on themes of love and alienation also became extremely popular with teenagers, which grew a cult following about them which still persists today.

  • Breakup

Tensions grew between Morrissey and Marr, despite the band's growing success. The band broke up in 1987, after which Morrissey immediately pursued a solo career and Marr went on to collaborate with other bands. Morrissey is still currently touring, and Marr now plays with the band Modest Mouse.
