The Remains of the Day is the third novel from Japanese-British author Kazuo Ishiguro. It won the 1989 Booker Prize.
Plot Synopsis
The Remains of the Day presents the reflections of Stevens, a butler, as he drives to meet his former co-worker, Miss Kenton, who he has not seen for over twenty years. The two had worked together in the house of Lord Darlington for many years. In flashbacks, we are shown how Stevens unwavering loyalty, sense of class, and professional pride kept him from acknowledging the unspoken love he and Miss Kenton shared.
Critical Reception
The Remains of the Day was called a "tour de force" by Publishers Weekly. It received the 1989 Booker Prize, one of the highest honors of English Literature.
