The Reader

The Reader is a 2008 drama starring Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes, based on the novel of the same name by Bernhard Schlink.

The film has been nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Winslet won Best Actress at the 81st Annual Academy Awards on February 22, 2009.

Michael (David Kross), falls in love with an older woman Hanna (Kate Winslet), in Germany after World War II, while he is a teenager. Eight years later they meet again, when Michael is a law student observing the war crimes trials, and Hanna is one of the accused criminals.

Kate Winslet was the original choice for the lead role in The Reader but had to turn it down because of scheduling problems. Nicole Kidman was then cast as the lead but had to back out due to pregnancy. The Reader was nominated for several 2009 Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture (Drama), Stephen Daldry for Best Director, David Hare for Best Screenplay and Kate Winslet for Best Supporting Actress.
