  • Plot:

    The story of The Princess Bride is told through a grandfather Peter Falk and grandson (Fred Savage). The grandfather reads this renaissance-era fairy tale to his grandson who is home sick. He tells the story of Buttercup (Robin Wright Penn) and her farmhand Wesley (Cary Elwes). The two fall in love and Wesley leaves to seek a fortune so they can marry. While he is gone Buttercup receives word that his ship was attacked, feared dead she reluctantly accepts a marriage proposal from Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon). Before the wedding however she is kidnapped, her captures are followed by a mysterious "man in black" who turns out to be Wesley. He helps to free Buttercup and reveals what has happened to him over the last few years. Prince Humperdinck eventually catches up with them and subsequently captures and tortures Wesley to death (all the while telling his bride he would be saved). Wesley has to be brought back to life by magician Miracle Max (played by Billy Crystal) and goes on to crash the wedding and save Buttercup. In classic fairytale style the two ride of into the sunset on a white horse.
