The Polar Express is an animated 2004 Christmas-oriented children's film about a young boy who is taken on a ride by the Polar Express train to the North Pole so that he can discover the true spirit of Christmas. Based on the popular children's book by Chris Van Allsburg of the same name, the movie uses performance capture technology to digitally capture and animate the movements of the lead actors. While the movie was a commercial smash, it received mixed reviews from critics, many of whom thought that the movie's animation style made the characters too life like. The film was rated number one out of the G rated films released in 2004.Box Office Mojo: The Polar Express
Critic's Responses
"The Polar Express is a movie for more than one season; it will become a perennial, shared by the generations. It has a haunting, magical quality because it has imagined its world freshly and played true to it, sidestepping all the tiresome Christmas cliches that children have inflicted on them this time of year."—Roger EbertRogerEbert.com: The Polar Express Review
"Those human characters in the film come across as downright ... well, creepy. So The Polar Express is at best disconcerting, and at worst, a wee bit horrifying."—CNNCNN.com: The Polar Express Review
