The Platters were one of the premier vocal groups of the 1950s. They had their first number one hit in 1955 with "The Great Pretender". Many more hits would follow including "Only You", "Twilight Time", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes".
Career
The Platters got together in 1953 in Los Angeles, California, signed by Federal Records. While their first tour was successful, their sales and chart standings were not, causing them to switch to Mercury Records, and all the members shared an equal interest and stock shares in the group. In 1955, they released their first hit "The Great Pretender", with many more charted hits to follow.
The last of the star members left the group in 1969. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1989.
