The Picture of Dorian Gray

  • The Picture of Dorian Gray is an 1890 novel written by Oscar Wilde.
  • Plot Synopsis

After having a portrait painted of him, a young Dorian Gray becomes convinced that beauty is all that matters in life. He wishes his portrait grow old instead of him, and the wish is mysteriously granted.

Dorian then falls in love with a Shakespearean actress, Sibyl, and the two wed against the wishes of her family. Now in love with Dorian, she somehow loses her ability to act, which was the reason Dorian loved her to begin with. He dismisses her, prompting her to commit suicide. Dorian notices afterward that his portrait showed an older version of him, and that it continued to age with every sin he committed.

For the next 18 years, Dorian commits murder, blackmail, and nearly goes insane over the disgusting image his portrait eventually transforms into. In the end, he stabs the painting, which in turn kills him, ending the curse that haunted him his entire life.
