  • About the Buckeye

In 1950, the Athletic Council for the university adopted the term "buckeye," which first originated in Ohio in the 1700s. The buckeye is a tree found in the state which produces dark, shiny brown nuts. Pioneers who first came across the tree noticed its unique characteristics and began using the wood and keeping the nuts for good luck. The first resident to be called a buckeye was in 1788 when a very tall man named Ebenezer Sprout was given the nickname by Indians who greeted him and were in awe with his tall stature. Soon after, writers in the area were also known as buckeyes, and eventually the university adopted the name. The Ohio State University: History
