  • Plot Summary

    Facing execution, Ben Harper (Peter graves) confides to his cell mate Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) that he has hidden a stolen fortune near his home in the midwestern United States. After being released from prison, Powell, posing as a traveling preacher, seeks out Ben's family and marries his widow. Soon, Harper's two children are all that stands between Powell and the money and he will stop at nothing to get it from them.
