The Mummies were a Northern
California garage rock-
punk band that formed in
1988 and were highly influential on the subsequent garage revival of the
'90s, as well as the mainstream wave of garage punk that emerged in the early-
2000s. The band's own influences included
1960s bands like
The Sonics, as well as the godfather of the '90s revival, English artist
Billy Childish. The Mummies' trademark was their mummy costumes, which seemed to come straight out of
1950s horror film kitsch. The band also promoted a philosophy of "Budget Rock," eschewing professionalism and technical skill.
