Darabont and King
This is the third Stephen King adaptation by Frank Darabont. He had wanted to adapt the story The Mist as his directorial debut, but instead adapted a different King story, The Shawshank Redemption. In 1999, Darabont followed up with a film version of King's novel The Green Mile.
References
The film contains a number of references to other horror films and to the writings of Stephen King. For example, in the opening shot, commercial artist David Drayton (played by Thomas Jane) is working on a painting that seems to represent a scene from King's The Dark Tower book series, and other posters for popular films (including John Carpenter's The Thing can be seen on the walls behind him.
