Conquest Campaign
The Lord of the Rings: Conquest features two campaigns in its single-player mode. One focuses on the Armies of the West and follows the major events of the Lord of the Rings films. During this campaign, players get the chance to control many of the major protagonists from The Lord of the Rings, including Gandalf, Aragorn and Legolas. The other campaign focuses on the armies of Mordor in a hypothetical scenario in which The One Ring was never destroyed and Sauron never defeated. In this campaign, players can embody the evil wizard Saruman and even Sauron himself. The campaign mode can be played co-operatively with another person on a split screen and takes approximately ten hours to complete.GameSpot: The Lord of the Rings: Conquest Impressions (July 15, 2008)-
Training
- Achievement From the main menu, start with the Training level, enabling you to earn "War of the Last Alliance."
- You'll see a cutscene of the Lord of the Rings' back story, explaining the origin of the ring. The story game picks in 3441, in the second age.
- For this mission, the Warrior is your only option. Press A to select him.
- Use the left thumbstick to move around. You can move the right thumbstick to control the camera angle, or click RS to center it on your character's back. Follow your comrades down the hill.
- X is a light attack, Y is a medium attack and B is a heavy attack. These enemies are faily simple, so play around with the different attacks to get a feel for each one.
- If you get knocked down, press A to get up quickly. The A button also makes the character jump.
- After the first wave of characters, you're told that The Warrior can string together combos. Practice with the combo of X, X, X, Y, Y, B. Space each button press about a half second apart -- you'll see the buttons on the screen disappear with each successful step of the combo.
- Once you've completed this combo, another round of enemies will appear. Use what you've just learned to defeat them.
- Now, you'll learn about modifiers. LB is used differently for each character. In this case, it can be held during sword slashes to perform fire attacks. While holding LB, press X for a lunging "Fire Strike," Y for a "Whilrlwind Sweep" and B for a powerful "Flame of Fury." Use the fire sword on the next wave of enemies.
- HINT: Pressing LB plus B is a block breaker, and it can be used to defeat any enemy that is shielding your attacks. Try this when prompted.
- After this, a green health bar and red energy bar will appear on the screen, along with a mini map. Read about this new information and press A to continue. WARNING: Now that the real game has begun, holding LB for special attacks will deplete the amount of special energy you have. More can be collected by defeating enemies.
- Hold RT to pull out a throwing axe. Target a nearby enemy and let go of the trigger to fling the axe. Clear out the nearby enemies and head up the narrow pathway opposite the way you came.
- A green orb lies ahead. Collect it to gain health, then use everything you've learned to fight the crowd of enemies in front of you. The combo of X, X, X, Y, Y, B is effective.
- Move up the stairs. At the top, you'll learn to block by pressing LT. Continue forward.
- At the turn, you'll be instructed to use a CrowdBreaker attack by holding LT and pressing B. This can be performed only when your energy bar is filled, so wait until the enemy is piled up in front of you before executing it.
- Clear out the remaining enemies and keep moving forward. If you get damaged, don't forget to pick up any green orbs first.
- Run into the gold Capture Ring ahead. Don't let any enemies inside as they come from over the wall to your left.
- Once the point is captured, stand next to it and press RB to bring up the class select screen. Choose the Archer and press A to continue.
- An Orc Archer will appear on the ledge in front of you. Target it by moving the right thumbstick and press RT to fire an arrow. Several more will follow. Dispatch of them in the same way.
- You're then instructed to hold LT to zoom in. Do this and shoot at the far Orc Archers on the ridge. After that, you can move to the next objective, indicated with a yellow arrow on your mini map.
- A few enemies are lurking about at the next capture point. If you're not sure where they are, look at where your allies are firing. You can defeat any enemies that get inside the capture point by pressing X to kick them.
- Press Y to pull out a poison arrow, then press RT to fire it at the enemies along the wall to your right.
- The archer has two other special arrows as well. Pressing LB fires a Multi-Arrow, and pressing B arms a Fire Arrow that knocks enemies down when fired with RT. Try them both on the next batch of baddies.
- Use a combination of all three special arrows to defeat the remaining enemies. Then, approach the capture point and press RB. Switch to the Scout and press A to continue.
- Pressing LB turns the Scout invisible. Once cloaked, run behind a nearby enemy and press RB to stab it in the back. Defeat two enemies this way, then learn to roll by pressing LT while running.
- The next set of enemies can be defeated with conventional attacks. Here, you'll learn a valuable hint about combos: They always start with light attacks and end with heavy attacks. The scout uses a combo of X, X, Y, Y, Y, Y, B.
- After the initial round of enemies, you're instructed to use special attacks. While holding LB, press X for the Foe Hewer, Y for the Foe Hammer and B for Blasting Powder. Try them all while dispatching this group of opponents.
- Hold RT to pull out a Satchel Bomb. Target your enemy with the right thumbstick and let go of the trigger to toss the bomb.
- After defeating this group, you'll get to choose from any of the three characters at the Capture Point before continuing. We'll go with the Warrior for now. Note that you can also change characters at the nearby Statue.
- Head into the hallway and around the corner. Run down the ramp to face the next group of baddies. Most of them are easily cleared out with Whirlwind Sweeps. Hold LB and press Y to perform this move. Then, take down any remaining enemies with regular combos.
- Go the the capture point. Use the Whirlwind Sweep once again to defeat the crowd of enemies that quickly swarms in. Once the point is yours, press RB and switch to the Mage.
- Holding RB as the Mage charges up a lightning attack. These bolts can jump between enemies, so fire them into crowds to score the most damage.
- After pummeling enemies with lighting, you're prompted to perform special attacks. LB heals nearby allies, Y knocks down nearby foes and B launches firewalls. Allies with green health icons above them are in most need of your aid, so help them as soon as you can.
- The mage can also perform a regular attack by pressing X. Use this and lighting to recharge your special attacks, and defeat the remaining enemies.
- Head to the control point marked on your mini map. Sauron will appear, and you'll be able to switch to a Hero to fight him. Press RB at the capture point to take control of Isildur.
- Though Isildur is a powerful character, his basic controls are the same as that of the Warrior.
- Sauron is a fierce opponent that fights back with powerful combo attacks. Your best attack against it is the Narsil Spike, which can be performed by holding LB and pressing B. After executing this attack, hold LT to block Sauron's counter attacks.
- Keep pounding Sauron with the Narsil Spike attack. If you run out of special energy, you can attack regular enemies in the distance to regain it.
- Achievement: Defeat Sauron and you will be rewarded with "War of the Last Alliance." It's now time to start the main campaign.
